Budget impasse stalls prison plans near Kingman

Arizona: Budget issues halt MTC plans

Associated Press - September 2, 2009 12:14 PM ET

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - The state budget impasse in Phoenix will stall plans to operate an expanded prison south of Kingman early next year.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. spokesman Carl Stuart says expansion of the facility from 1,400 to 3,400 beds is ahead of schedule for accepting more inmates early next year.

Stuart says uncertainty over the state budget, however, leaves funding for operation of the expanded prison in question.

He says MTC had planned to begin recruiting 200 more employees for the facility in October but has postponed those plans indefinitely.
